“Reward to the Holiest within the Top” by John Henry Newman

Reward to the Holiest within the top,
And within the depth be reward,
In all His phrases most fantastic,
Most positive in all His methods.
O loving knowledge of our God!
When all was sin and disgrace,
A second Adam to the struggle
And to the rescue got here.
O wisest love! that flesh and blood,
Which did in Adam fail,
Ought to attempt afresh towards the foe,
Ought to attempt and will prevail;
And {that a} larger reward than grace
Ought to flesh and blood refine,
God’s presence and His very self
And essence all divine.
O beneficiant love! that He, who smote
In man for man the foe,
The double agony in man
For man ought to bear;
And within the backyard secretly
And on the cross on excessive
Ought to educate His brethren and encourage
To undergo and to die.
Reward to the Holiest within the top,
And within the depth be reward,
In all His phrases most fantastic,
Most positive in all His methods.
