“We Sing the Reward of Him Who Died” by Thomas Kelly

We sing the reward of Him who died,
Of Him who died upon the cross.
The sinner’s hope let males deride;
For this we depend the world however loss.
Inscribed upon the cross we see
In shining letters “God is love.”
He bears our sins upon the tree;
He brings us mercy from above.
The cross! It takes our guilt away;
It holds the fainting spirit up;
It cheers with hope the gloomy day
And sweetens each bitter cup.
It makes the coward spirit courageous
And nerves the feeble arm for struggle;
It takes the fear from the grave
And gilds the mattress of dying with gentle.
The balm of life, the remedy of woe,
The measure and the pledge of affection,
The sinner’s refuge right here beneath,
The angels’ theme in heav’n above.
To Christ, who received for sinners grace
By bitter grief and anguish sore,
Be reward from all of the ransomed race
Perpetually and forevermore.
